2018 Summer Lecture Series

Jun 6, 2018 (Past event)

“I AM NOT A SAVAGE!” Presented by Steve Freisen

After the defeat of the Lakota (Sioux) and their placement on reservations, the United States government began efforts to eliminate the Lakota culture. Performing with Wild West shows became a way for the Lakota to preserve and promote their culture. Friesen’s lecture covers the impact of the performances upon Europeans and their understanding of the American West. Since June 6th is the anniversary of D-Day, the lecture touches on the Lakota in Europe during World War II.
