Snow Removal and Avalanche Mitigation on Colorado’s Highways: Past and Present presented by the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT)

Managing snow and avalanche danger on Colorado’s highways is a monumental task, but it has been an essential part of winter road maintenance since the early 1900s. The lecture will include numerous historic photos showcasing the history of snow removal methods and machinery at CDOT, the various technologies used in avalanche mitigation and the people who braved the weather and harrowing driving conditions to keep Colorado’s mountain highways open in the winter months.
